Army lose to Oxford University by 74 runs – Fri 10 May 19

The Army XI suffered their first defeat since Lord’s in 2018 at the hands a of a well drilled and ruthlessly efficient Oxford University XI.  Having won the toss Oxford skipper elected to bat first.  The breakthrough for the Army came in the 8th over with Oxford providing a solid start, Rackow bowled by the Skipper with the score on 56.  The Army bowlers toiled for the rest of the afternoon, balls dropping tantalisingly short of the fielders and it was Surestha who managed to remove Bevin caught behind.  However, opener Naylor continued to push the score along at pace until he was run out by Hill for 64 with the score on 164 – 3 in the final over.  Oxford University concluded their innings 168 – 3.

The Army response started with the loss of Wiseman in the first over, adjudged to have been run out at the non-strikers end with just a single run on the board.  Connor Reed was then caught in the deep soon after as the Oxford University bowlers maintained a tidy length, backed up by some excellent fielding.  The Skipper looked to have the measure of the attack but was caught in the deep and then Fletcher was caught the ball after he had driven the ball onto his own knee.  Oxford continued to strangle the run chase as the Army threw caution to the wind in an attempt to find the boundary, but to no avail.  Army XI were left 74 short in the chase at the end of the 20 overs.

Our thanks as ever to OUCC for hosting us at The Parks.
