The UKAF side enjoyed a winning start to the 2019 season, defeating the Duke of Norfolk XI by 6 wickets. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the hosts looked comfortable on a good batting wicket reaching 28 without loss in the ninth over before Fus Marlon Simon (RWELSH) and a sharp bit of fielding from debutant Cpl Varun Bali (KRH) removed both opening batsmen, bowled and run out respectively. Lt Cdr Jon Parker (MOD Corsham) and SAC John Iniff (RAF Honnington) on debut also picked up cheap wickets, and the hosts were reduced to 59-4 before the IPL-contracted Mahesh Rawan and minor counties’ batsman Steve Naylor added 96 for the fifth wicket. The partnership was broken by Sgt Ross Dearden (AC Bovington) and a cluster of wickets fell before some late hitting from West Indian fast bowler Rico Webb elevated the total to 243-8 before the declaration came after 54 overs. In reply, debutant Cfn Luke Fletcher (6 Bn REME) and Flt Lt Adam Fisher (47 Sqn) added 27 apiece, supporting Bdr Graham Wiseman (12RA) who brought up his fifty from just 33 balls. Sgt Ash Watson (15 FP Sqn) was dismissed for a duck and Wiseman fell for an excellent 86 only 8 balls later, leaving the game in the balance at 144-4. Army captain, Cpl Jay Boynton (17 Regt RLC) steadied the innings, supported by Bali who played confidently to bring up a debut half century from just 32 balls. The pair added 101 for the fifth wicket as UKAF coasted home in just 34 overs, Boynton finishing 37 not out. Wiseman was voted man of the match for his 86 which included 11 fours and 4 huge sixes, in a repeat of his thrilling innings in the same fixture last season.
