MCC 263-6 (Sgt A Watson 3-52; Cpl J Boynton 2-33) beat UKAF 257-8 (Boynton 85; SAC A Mcgeorge 47; Cpl V Bali 39)
Burnaby Road, Portsmouth

The MCC defeated UKAF by 4 wickets in close-fought fixture in Portsmouth. Batting first, UKAF lost openers Wiseman and Fletcher both for 0, and captain Fisher for 6, and were reeling at 17-3 in the fourth over. Watson and Boynton began to rebuild the innings before the RAF man fell for 19. Bali joined the Army captain and the 2 played watchfully, rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries to share their second century partnership in 2 days. Bali fell for 39 having looked increasingly assured, and Boynton was bowled for a superb 85 from 114 balls with the score at 192-5 with 8 overs left. SAC Andy Mcgeorge (RAF Brize Norton) added late impetus to the innings scoring 47, and he was well supported by the lower order with UKAF closing on 257, a par score on a slow wicket despite a difficult start to the innings. In reply, wayward opening spells from Parker and Iniff allowed the visitors to coast to 49 in just 6 overs before the introduction of spin – Dearden, Boynton, Watson and SAC Tom Fairclough (RAF Wittering) – slowed the scoring rate and wickets fell at regular intervals. When Watson removed Steve Lambert for an excellent 101 and Steve Naylor for 50, UKAF looked like they might swung momentum in their favour but the MCC lower order played watchfully to overturn the target with less than 3 overs to spare. Watson and Boynton bowled with excellent control and variation to pick up 3-52 and 2-33 respectively. The MCC’s Steve Lambert was man of the match for his century which set the tone for the successful run chase, with Boynton the pick of the UKAF performances for his contributions with both bat and ball.
